In the 1980s, Hertford North's original 1924 entrance was rebuilt with an airy vaulted atrium welcoming visitors to the ticket hall. The station is on the Hertford Loop Line that connects to Moorgate and London King's Cross. Platform 1 takes trains to London, and platform 2, trains leaving the capital. With no rail link between Hertford North and Hertford East, it's a 25-minute walk or ten-minute bus ride across town to Hertford East, but a wander around the bustling town centre filled with independent shops and eateries or popping in to Hertford Castle on the way makes the trip well worth while. With four rivers converging on the town, in the 1800s a thriving waterway shipping industry took corn and barley produced in the Hertfordshire county down the Thames to London, and ensured the town's prosperity. Today, pleasure craft are a regular fixture on the waters, and the river is also a great spot for canoeing and kayaking.
